What are we actually measuring the solubility of?

Solubility measurements are becoming increasing accurate and reliable, but a key aspect of understanding drug dissolution profiles is to have a sound knowledge of the material we are measuring the solubility of. This is especially important as many pharmaceutical compounds can form hydrates, exhibit polymorphism etc. This talk will cover determining what we are measuring the solubility of through the use of X-ray powder diffraction. Examples will include pattern matching, quantitative analysis of mixtures and ab-initio structure solution to determine the crystal structures of new, previously unknown materials uncovered in solubility measurements.
